Instead of trekking down to the IKEA showroom with your measuring tape, camera, and color swatches, you can now shop comfortably in your own home without the fear of buying something that does not fit with the rest of your decor. IKEA’s upcoming 2014 catalog, which will be released on August 25, will allow you to preview products in your home using augmented reality to ensure that your purchase is the perfect size, style, and color for your interior. IKEA’s iOS and Android applications will let you preview over 90 products, and the catalog will feature 50 pages that can be scanned for additional information.
To take advantage of IKEA‘s augmented reality catalog, customers download a program through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The catalog is placed within the room the user wants to decorate, and the application senses and measures the booklet itself to create accurate images. Products then appear on your smartphone’s screen in the correct size and color. IKEA hopes their catalog will help to cut down in accidental purchases, or what they refer to as “square peg, round hole syndrome”. They estimate that seventy percent of people do not know the area of their homes, and fourteen percent have admitted to buying items that were the wrong dimensions for their rooms.
“Our customers want to be able to test out whether the products they’ve been inspired by in our catalog will work in their own homes – particularly when it comes to larger pieces of furniture. Offering a way of using mobile technology to enable to test products means the technology has a practical purpose and really helps customers visualize the way their homes could look.” says Peter Wright, Country Marketing Manager, IKEA UK and Ireland.
With the help of cutting-edge software, IKEA is looking to make interior decorating more fun, efficient, and less wasteful. By cutting down on returns, the company can potentially save money and energy in shipping and production costs. Sadly, you still have to go to the store in person to visit the cafeteria.
